Going Forward Here at the Flat Hat

Well hello there. It’s been a while hasn’t it?

Sorry about the lack of activity here on the Flat Hat sports site over the last couple of weeks. As many of you know, we have a tradition at William and Mary called “Study twelve hours a day at the expense of fun, family and emotional stability” which we all take part in over the last two weeks of finals. But now that we are finally done, and the crying has temporarily subsided, we wanted to make a couple of announcements.

First of all, I want to express, on the behalf of the entire staff here at the Sports section, our sincerest gratitude for all your help last semester. As you can probably tell, we have been trying to shift the tone of our coverage of the William and Mary Sports section since we took over in the spring. We are looking to write longer, more informative pieces which brings you closer to the athletes on the field and takes maybe a little more time to reflect on some of the issues off the field.

We have not been perfect, but our effort, in my opinion, has been valiant. A lot of the credit, deservedly, goes to our writers, but we as a staff wanted to take the time to give you, the reader, the credit you deserve as well.

Every page view, every link to an article every comment (even the comments which suggest we should plan a vacation to Hades sometime in the near future) lets us know someone is reading and reflecting on our work, which is our ultimate goal. And while we appreciate any praise you guys may have given us over the last semester, perhaps we appreciate even more the criticisms. Your criticism forces us to reflect on our work (and sometimes improve our spelling), and although we may not always agree with your comments, please be assured that they are all taken to heart.

Speaking of your comments, this brings me to my next point of what YOU would like to see covered here on the Press Box Blog in the future. Let me explain: starting next semester, we will hopefully begin to supply more daily coverage on the Flat Hat website. As a part of that coverage, we hope to have a daily feature up on the Press Box every day which covers some aspect of William and Mary sports.

While the coverage of each individual sport will have to wait until the fall, we would like to get our blog off the ground sometime in the next couple of weeks. What we would like to know from you is what you would want to read about in a daily blog covering William and Mary athletics.

Are you interested in stories straight from the mouths of some of the Tribe’s athletes? Would you like to read some of our writer’s opinions on the games they covered? On the whole, would you want the blog to take a lighter tone than perhaps some of our other posts? Do you want to read about the lives of some of the Tribe’s recent alumni? Obviously, this blog is still in the planning stage, but we would like to hear from you. What aspect of William and Mary athletics would you like to know more about starting this summer?

Take some time to think about it. If everything breaks right, starting tomorrow I will be sitting on a beach with a cold drink in my hands, so I guarantee I won’t get back to your comments for at least a week. But, we would like to get as much feedback as we can before starting our new blog.

Think of it as our way of saying thanks for all your help this year.
