Shukla shows Tribe pride through diversity

04/22/2008

This week’s That Guy, Nimish Shukla exudes Tribe pride that transcends his presence on campus as an enthusiastic bhangra dancer, master chef and avid follower of “The Hills.”

Wendy Chan finds Neverland in Honduras

04/16/2008

As other students prepare for exams or crank out those last pages on their final papers, Wendy Chan has her mind focused elsewhere: the Students Helping Honduras Walkathon. This weekend she hopes to mobilize students to help raise money for a scholarship fund for the girls of the Copprome Orphanage. Chan’s college career, from her involvements in Alpha Phi Omega, SHH, Service Leader Corps and Global Village Project, is marked by compassion and...

That Guy: Roshan Patel travels the world

04/08/2008

Roshan Patel is talented, playful and creative. Glossy pictures of elephants, zebras and young children laughing on a dirt road hang from the wall of his dorm room, defying the rules of time — moments frozen in frames which serve as fond reminders of his summer in Kenya and family trips back to India. They grant us a series of small windows into a place where existence is tenuous and not to be taken for granted, vignettes of afternoons in an African village, or a rhino’s alertness when it suspects itself being photographed. There is no doubt these snapshots are beautiful, but the man responsible for them is even more captivating. This week’s That Guy regales us with stories of winning a wife, tracking the grieving habits of elephants and getting slapped by a monkey.

That Girl: Laura Whipple

04/01/2008

Laura Whipple drops her overstuffed blue Vera Bradley tote on the Marketplace table with a clump and runs over to say hello. She is full of energy — not surprising given the multiple cups of coffee she drinks daily. A bit flustered and on the move, she still takes time to sit down and ask her friends how they’re doing. Without cues, she congratulates each on their respective achievements of the past week and wishes...

That Guy: Dexter Bush-Scott

03/21/2008

Dexter Bush-Scott is enthusiastic, personable and quite the character. You can find him striding across campus from one activity to the next, often dressed to the nines in ties and slacks.

That Girl: Summer Marion

03/14/2008

In a world where students are often knowledgeable about only their own nation’s politics, Summer Marion offers a refreshing change: Just ask and she will happily talk to you about governmental structures in Asia, the political warfare and struggles in Africa or the most recently elected world leader.

That Girl: Jess Lamont

02/15/2008

Jess Lamont is likely to be the only student on this campus who can read and write fluently in Sanskrit.

That Guy: Andrew Cockram

02/08/2008

This week’s That Guy, Andrew Cockram, describes himself as an eccentric bobo — a bohemian bourgeoisie who aspires to be a true Southern gentleman, but also likes listening to jam bands and wearing African garb. He also has a talent for connecting and linking a diverse student body. Drew can often be found playing washboard for the Appalachian Music Ensemble or sitting at a table on the UC Terrace in deep discussion. His quirky and relaxed character is evident by his clothing: a distinct mix of preppy J. Crew pants and brightly colored wraps and tie-dyed shirts.

That Girl: Laura Ferrell

02/01/2008

Laura Ferrell’s composed, gentle and motherly personality reminds me of the Laura Ingalls Wilder character from the “Little House on the Prairie” series. They are also both witty and committed to their respective causes. Instead of hailing from Kansas however, this Laura is from the nearby Richmond area where she grew up with her parents and an older sister. And as Laura describes to me her love of lying in bed reading a good Virginia Woolf novel, I am taken back to “Little House of the Prairie,” only this time, it is a different Laura I see curled up inside a log cabin with a fire crackling in the background.

That Guy: Andrew Cunningham

01/26/2008

I walk into the room for our interview to find Andrew Cunningham sitting at a table with two cups of fresh hot cocoa, candy canes and marshmallows. The table is scattered with holiday cards, most of which are already written and addressed. He is potentially the only person I know...

That Girl: Rebecca Hamfeldt

01/18/2008

One of Rebecca Hamfeldt’s favorite quotes is Buscaglia’s “Life is a paradise for those who love many things with a passion.” Rebecca has spent her years at the College finding and promoting those things about which she is passionate — InterVarsity, DoG Street Journal and Students for Life.

That Guy: Jonathan Welle

12/08/2007

Late at night, you can find Jonathan Welle in one of two places: slaving over work in Tucker Hall or streaking somewhere on campus. Welle, with his incredibly dynamic personality, is the only man who could mesh these activities so seamlessly. He’s a modern cowboy with his signature eyebrow...

That Girl: Tina Ho

11/30/2007

Tina Ho is the human version of the energizer bunny. Her current involvements range from serving as the student representative to the Board of Visitors to being a youth soccer coach. Every Wednesday night when the clock hits 10:30 p.m., a group of students leave their study groups and late...

That Guy: Judd Kennedy

11/16/2007

Judd Kennedy has a lot to smile about. He has just been announced as a Marshall Scholar. This is a scholarship that will finance his studies at any U.K. university of his choice next year. Judd was also recently initiated into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. These accolades are just the beginning of describing Judd: eloquence, unassuming intellect — he is fluent in Arabic — passion, and of course, his beautiful eyes and gentle demeanor. That Guy discusses his journey, which includes his passion for social justice, his studies and his plan to eventually live and work in the Middle East.

That Guy: Daniel Maguire

11/02/2007

Daniel Maguire is the male version of Oprah — a man whose patient and nurturing personality encourages fellow students to confide in and rely on him. Dan’s love for the College is immediately evident.
