Sophomore pitcher Matt Davenport will be keeping a weekly journal where he will document his thoughts and experiences during the baseball season. Here, in his second entry of the season, Matt describes the Tribe pitching staff’s approach in the win over North Carolina.
#11 UNC Goes Down
We had had our ups and down as a team going into the game against North Carolina, especially the weekend before against Seton Hall. In that series we struggled to score runs for the first time all season.
William and Mary fans wanting to see the Tribe in the postseason for the first time in 27 years might fare better than originally expected in securing tickets to the College’s Tuesday night NIT matchup at North Carolina.
The College received an initial allotment of 100 tickets per NIT and NCAA rules, a mark that was quickly blown past by a lengthy wait list. However, as of 3 p.m.
Senior runner Jon Grey turned in another top performance Friday. Grey raced to a fifth place overall showing at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a career best time of 13:46.12 in the 5000-m event.
Grey’s place earned him his second All-American award.
According to Tribeathletics.com, Grey held back early to remain in the main pack. He started making his move with about 2400-m remaining and improved from 14th to 7th over the next 800-m.
Grey’s time ranks second-best all-time for a College competitor on an indoor track.
Before the 2009-2010 season is even completed, William and Mary’s 22 wins and elevated national profile are already paying off. Awaiting a likely NIT bid, the second in school history, to be announced Sunday evening, the Tribe accepted an offer Wednesday to appear in the 2010 Legends Classic preseason tournament, taking place in late November.
The event will see the College journey to take on Syracuse, Michigan, Georgia Tech or UTEP in the opening round, before hosting a two-day subregional round.
It started with the Tribe down six, a minute left in the half.
“We believe. We believe,” the alumni chanted, and soon the students joined in. Half of Richmond Coliseum united behind the Tribe, trying to conjure up an NCAA tournament berth, as if through pure belief.
Belief is hard. Belief requires your heart to commit to something your head recognizes as illogical. And belief unfulfilled hurts.
One of the few niceties about being a Tribe fan over the years was the lack of belief required.
Not surprisingly, That Flat Hat was not the only news source covering Sunday night’s affair between William and Mary and Northeastern. After the 47-45 victory, here is a taste of what other observers had to offer.
Andy Katz: ESPN
Sports journalist and basketball specialist for ESPN, Andy Katz, had the following two tweets after the Tribe pulled of the late victory against Northeastern.
“Tribe trying to get to the Dance for the first time. Remember Tribe beat MD, Richmond and Wake earlier this season.”
“Wow.
After piloting the Tribe to 20 wins and the third seed in the upcoming CAA tournament, William and Mary Head Coach Tony Shaver was named CAA coach of the year Thursday evening. It was the third time he has received the honor. He previously won the award in 2007 and 2008.
Senior guard David Schneider was named to the All-CAA second team after averaging 15.8 points per game for the College. Schneider was also presented with the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, recognizing the senior’s integrity, sportsmanship and scholarship.

Friday: Hurry Up and Wait
When the team first heard rumors at the end of last season that we would potentially be playing SEC powerhouse LSU, an instant excitement began to grow about this season, especially after the disappointing end to last year.
I wanted to write a blog post on my piece on the incoming men’s basketball recruiting class because even with approximately 2,700 words, I felt like I just barely scratched the surface on the work that went into this year’s class.
Some of the stuff left out of part one will appear in the second feature on men’s basketball, which will run in a couple of weeks. Other stuff I couldn’t fit into the feature, so I’ll put it in here:
-From what I gathered, the Tribe was very close to landing Bloomington South forward Erik Fromm, who eventually committed to Butler.
It’s been quite an up-and-down ride, but with two games remaining, some clarity can finally be injected into the CAA playoff picture.
