Meme of the Week chronicles one meme per week that I, the almost too-literate author of this column, believe truly stood prouder and abover than its meme-peers. If you do not know what a meme is, and are now frustrated that you’ve seen the word used literally one thousand times in the post already, then I pity you from my high and ivory tower of internet knowledge. I would drop a rock on your head from this great height to put you out of your misery, but there are no rocks up here and I don’t feel like climbing all the way down to your level just to find one.
Episode recap in 150 words: Off the island, Jack tries to talk Locke into spinal surgery but he refuses because – as Jack’s snooping reveals – he incapacitated his father, Anthony Cooper, in the same plane crash that broke his spine. On the island, Jack agrees to help Smocke spring Sawyer and Co. but refuses to leave with them. They release them from the Dharma cages and go to the Ajira plane. Smocke finds a bomb aboard and redirects them to the sub.
Due to work and life, I suspect my episode recap will be a little late this week. But, this week, I have something to hold you all over until its posting! Consider it a late Easter present.
This past weekend none other than William Mapother visited W&M’s campus! For those of you less versed in the show, he plays Ethan Rom on “Lost.” While his visit, in honor of the International Mercury Expo, focused on social activism, the question and answer period immediately devolved into island questions. And guess who was there with a pen and pad ready to gather info for her adoring readers!
I’m all about mafia parodies, and “Community” did a great job of theirs. The idea that chicken fingers are a source of power is about as original as I can think. Abed’s voiceover just added to the cinematic feeling of the episode – which I must say, this show does well.
Jeff’s been doing great in his inner struggle to not be in charge. We really got the idea that he was trying not to be fazed by Abed’s usurpation of his power over the group, but it was still hitting a little too close to home.
I’ve gotta admit, I’m not a fan of when two episodes of “30 Rock” play in one night. They put all their comedic capital into one episode, and it’s hilarious. The other episode, though, isn’t so funny – it’s just marginally amusing. But let’s look at the good episode first.
Maybe I’m just getting soft, or maybe she’s getting better at it, but Nancy’s horrible Bostonian accent didn’t seem so horrible in this episode. I also like her character a lot more than I did. She’s a good foil to Avery.

Episode recap in 150 words: Off the island, many characters’ lives are beginning to intersect. Locke and Sun’s injuries brought them both to the hospital where Jack works. Sawyer arrested Kate and Sayid. Desmond got Claire to go to a lawyer, who happens to be Ilana, that Jack was meeting to read over his and Claire’s dad’s will. However, on the island, characters’ are dispersing. Sawyer and Kate hijack Smocke’s sailboat with Lapidus, Sun, Hurley, Claire, and Jack, but Jack gets cold feet and swims ashore.
The Flat Hat staff plans its summer in cinema. Executive editor Jess Gold cuts her finger on an Entertainment Weekly about thirty seconds in.
Episode recap in 150 words: On the island, Michael tells Hurley not to destroy the Ajira plane. Shortly thereafter, Ilana blows herself up and so Hurley blows up the Black Rock and all the dynamite to prevent anyone from detonating the plane. As a result, Richard, Miles, and Ben separate themselves from the crowd to continue the plane-demolition plan while Jack, Sun, and Lapidus follow a semi-clueless Hurley to Locke’s camp. Before they got there, Smocke took Desmond on a walk to an old well dug over an electromagnetic pocket and tossed him in.
