The Guinness Book of World Records confirmed Friday morning that the College of William and Mary’s April 19 attempt for the largest “Thriller” dance was successful.

The event, led by Kevin Dua ’09, took place in the Sunken Garden and attracted a participatory crowd of 242 students, faculty and local residents. Only 148 dancers were needed to break the record for the largest number of people dancing simultaneously to Michael Jackson’s 1984 single.

“I’m very surprised everything went so smoothly and that the end result was this record for the College,” Dua said.

He said he was proud the group was able to break the world record, however he downplayed his own role in the event.

“Its something everyone was a part of,” he said. “It was a collective effort that day.”

Guinness’s online record file currently reads:

“The largest thriller dance was achieved by Kevin Dua (USA) and 241 other participants in an event at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia, USA on 19 April 2009.”

Wow. Those rules suck.

Wow. Those rules suck.

Yeah, I like Kevin and all

Yeah, I like Kevin and all but those prisoners really did do it with more people and more skillfully…

This is a shame. The real

This is a shame. The real record should be held by the group who deserved it the most- that prison in the Philippines…

The dance done at WM is just a bunch of nerdy kids who are making a joke out of the dance…if you watch the video, it’s even more pitiful. None of the people are doing it together and some people are not even dancing although they were still counted in the final estimate.

Not that I really care who holds the record…I just think that this was a lame attempt by Dua to have his little claim to fame.

Wow LAME, your cool. You

Wow LAME, your cool. You mention people not doing the dance right, I guess Guiness sucks then. They can’t judge properly according to your standards. You are just too cool for breaking records. I think you should never comment on another online article again because you are just too amazing. Words just can’t describe rediculous you are.

No, I never said Guiness

No, I never said Guiness sucks- in fact, I like their beer very much. If by chance you’re referring to the Guinness Book of World Records, then yes, it is pretty simple to get recorded as doing something stupid if you have all the paperwork straight. If you have the time to do something stupid for the longest time or have the most people at your event, they’ll record anything in their book. So, I’m basically trying to say that it sucks that their standards are so low…and that the record didn’t go to the prisoners. It’s like beating Michael Phelps in a race at the Olympics but not regeristing first and then losing- even know everyone else knows you won.

Actually it’s funny

Actually it’s funny because the prisoners would not have qualified for the record, haha! According to Guinness World Records, the dance has to take place to the single version of the song (not the music video version) and the dance has to be at least 5 minutes of that 6-minute single. Secondly, you’ll notice that since the dance is only 2 minutes long, NATURALLY it has to be modified to last 5 minutes. So the prisoners couldn’t have earned it. Not because they’re too crazy, but because THIS record was in accordance with their rules, whereas the other was not.
