Two men escape Eastern State Hospital, one apprehended

Sunday, April 17, two convicted felons incarcerated at Eastern State Hospital located on Ironbound Rd. in Williamsburg escaped. The men were identified by Virginia State Police as Austin Preston Leigh and Bryant Marcus Wilkerson, and both of them were described as being “armed and dangerous.” Leigh was apprehended on the evening of April 17 around approximately 5:45p.m. and is being held at the Chesapeake City Jail without bond. Wilkerson still remains at large.

Students at the College of William and Mary received an email on the night of April 17 from the College’s Emergency Management Team informing them of the situation, and advising them to be cautious in the greater Williamsburg community. The email also stated that Wilkerson is currently wanted for violating felony probation and for escaping a mental facility.

The email from the College also stated that Wilkerson is not believed to be in the vicinity of the College, however, if students are to see him they should not approach him and should call 911.

  1. Help me with this. Under what legal status were these men held at ESH. Does ESH have a secure wing? Did they escape or did the just walk away? Why weren’t they held at Central State Hospital’s Forensic Unit? Or at a DOC facility?

  2. If these were DOC inmates why were they dropped off and no officers stayed with them. Why was this not disclosed to the facility how dangerous these 2 inmates were ?? I work for DOC we never leave inmates unattended unless they are admitted to the security wing. So make this make sense????

  3. Is ESH a good place to live? I’m 31 and seeking a full time place to call home. I have a brain tumor and have had 73 surgeries so have very serious brain damage. My cellphone number is 5403131579 if people want to text me as I have no voice.
