Head Coach Jimmye Laycock will announce his starting quarterback for the Tribe’s Sept. 4 opener against UMass Monday morning, and he has not ruled out any of the top three competitors. Senior Mike Callahan, junior Mike Paulus and redshirt freshman Brent Caprio have been vying for the starting job throughout the spring and summer.
“We’re still going over the evaluations and we’ll look at it over the weekend,” Laycock said. “I think all three of them are doing pretty well; they’ve been much improved over the spring.”
Paulus transferred from North Carolina in December to compete for the job vacated by graduated senior R.J. Archer. Callahan was set to be Archer’s top backup last season, before suffering a knee injury that ended his year. Caprio, meanwhile, was a highly touted freshman from Linwood, New Jersey, who spend last season running the scout team offense.
“It could be any of them,” Laycock said. “We’ve done a good job getting them all reps.”
