Football: Paulus to start against Villanova, Grimes questionable

Head Coach Jimmye Laycock announced Monday morning that junior quarterback Mike Paulus will start in Saturday’s marquee matchup against Villanova, extending his relief effort of senior starter Mike Callahan for at least another four quarters. Paulus relieved Callahan late in the third quarter last Saturday against Maine, leading the Tribe to a 21-point fourth-quarter comeback and a 24-21 win.

“I think [Paulus] handled the situation pretty well and made some big throws,” Laycock said. “He’ll start this weekend against Villanova, and we’ll go from there.”

Callahan remains out with a shoulder injury, and Laycock classified his status as week-to-week. The senior completed 9 of 17 passes for 101 yards and an interception before the injury Saturday. Paulus threw for 104 yards and a touchdown on 9 of 16 passing in a little over a quarter of action.

Laycock also announced that junior tailback Jonathan Grimes’ status is up in the air for Villanova, after being banged up Sept. 18 at Old Dominion. Grimes was limited against Maine, rushing for 16 yards on only five carries.

“It’s kind of early in the week to tell [if he will play],” Laycock said.
