Letter to the Editor: Searching for acceptance and equality
To the Editor:
September wasn’t the best month for the queer community. Five young men, ranging in age from 13 to 19 years, committed suicide as a result of homophobic bullying.
State may have pushed LGBT policy change
Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has allegedly advised the College of William and Mary to remove language that would protect against discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation from College policy.
Maryland State Senator Richard Madaleno, Jr. (D) described Cuccinelli’s alleged actions in a letter to the Chief Executive Officer of the Northrop Grumman Corporation, one of the country’s largest global security providers, Feb.
Behind Closed Doors: The problematic art of the pickup
Fellow TWAMPS, I am here to educate you about a new sexual trend: pickup artistry. A pickup artist is a man — has not yet become gender-neutral or gay friendly — who has studied various pieces of fine literature about women and is now certified to reel in as many hot babes as he desires.
Although I don’t personally think pickup artistry is a perfect panty-dropping recipe, I still believe it’s worthwhile for some of you average, frustrated chumps.
At the core of this method is perhaps the soundest piece of sexual advice anyone can get: Be confident.
Queering the way for future queens
As officers of the Lambda Alliance — the College of William and Mary’s organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and allied individuals — we are proud of our fellow students for electing Jessee Vasold ’11 as the Class of 2011 Homecoming queen. This election demonstrates our student body’s dedication to diversity.
Since zir election, many have wondered why Vasold ran for Homecoming queen. Vasold identifies as gender-queer, an identity that is outside the traditional man-woman gender binary.
Congratulations, good zir
The Class of 2011 announced that Jessee Vasold ’11 will be the College of William and Mary’s first genderqueer homecoming queen. To this, we know exactly what we want to say, but how to say it? We would like to give “zir” — a gender-neutral alternative to him or her — our most earnest congratulations, and the same is due to the open-minded student body that elected Vasold. It’s nice to have a surprise this homecoming that is at once heart-warming and phonologically fun.
Up-front cost or pay-as-you-wash?
In addition to voting on Student Assembly candidates this Thursday, students will take part in a referendum about changing the way students pay for laundry. The referendum would recommend changing the current pay-per-use system to one where all students pay an extra $20 in room fees at the beginning of each semester, then receive unlimited access to laundry machines.
p. Advertised as the “free laundry bill,” the proposal would be revenue-neutral.
