Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is requesting that governors across the nation to improve state record-sharing systems with a national background check system for gun purchases. He sent out an open letter to all 49 governors on the fifth anniversary of the mass shootings at Virginia Tech. “I would encourage you to evaluate your state’s reporting of mental health and other critical information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and take any required action relating to that reporting to prevent tragedies such as the shooting at Virginia Tech from happening again,” McDonnell said in the letter.
