Saturday, William and Mary traveled to Greenville, North Carolina to take on East Carolina. The Tribe (10-7) continued to display success in doubles play, a key factor in its 4-3 victory over the Pirates.
Freshman Michael Chen and sophomore Brenden Volk kicked things off for the College, defeating ECU’s Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker in a quick 6-2 contest at the No. 3 spot. The duo of junior Tristan Bautil and senior Alec Miller finished things off at the No. 1 spot, defeating Vlad Anghel and Freddie McGeehan 7-5 at the top spot.
With an early 1-0 lead, the Tribe went into singles play strong. Volk continued his hot streak with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 6 spot against the Pirates’ Will Bissett. Senior Christian Cargill continued the trend with his own success at the No. 2 spot over McGeehan, 6-1, 6-2, putting the Tribe up 3-0.
ECU claimed its first victory at the No. 1 spot, where Miller fell to Anghel 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Louis Newman followed in the senior’s footsteps, dropping his match at the No. 3 spot 6-4, 6-3 to Ronny Georgi. Kasey Countee’s 7-6(5), 6-2 triumph over freshman Finbar Talcott at the No. 4 spot tied the contest up at 3-3.
The College’s fate came down to freshman Sebastian Quiros’ match at the No. 5 spot against Renones. After winning a hard-fought first set 7-5, Quiros dominated the final set, claiming a 6-0 win for himself and securing a 4-3 victory for the Tribe. This marked Quiros’ fifth-straight win with a 6-1 record at the No. 5 spot.
The Tribe will continue its road trip when it travels to Murfreesboro, Tennessee to take on Middle Tennessee April 8.
