Wellie or not

Does it have to be raining to wear your Wellies? Some may say yes and some may say no, but either way the verdict is in: rain boots are in vogue at the College of William and Mary.

Solids, stripes, polka dots, animal prints… you name it and you can find your rain boots of choice. Solids are always classic and can add a pop of color to a simple outfit on any day, rain or shine. If your style is more bold, go for a print. Stripes and polka dots are more streamlined and come in an array of colors and a variety of styles, such as thick or thin stripes and oversized or tiny dots. Fun prints like leopard, zebra, or any other type of motif are more eclectic. But how to do you wear them?

On any given drizzly day, countless students sport their rubber rain boots around campus on the walk to class. Most wear them with a sweatshirt or jacket and jeans or leggings tucked into the boots, but there are a number of other ways to show them off.

If the rain is making you not want to get dressed up for class, stick with the tucked-in jeans or leggings and add a cute trench coat or blazer to polish up the look. A cute t-shirt underneath the jacket can add a bit of flair as well.

Another way to wear Wellies is with a casual dress or skirt. This may seem hard to pull off, but if you know how to put the ensemble together it will look great. First you have to look at what kind of boots you have. Are they solid? If so, you can wear them with a printed dress without making your outfit too busy. If your boots have a classic print like stripes or dots, you should stick to a solid dress or skirt and maybe add a touch of a print somewhere else in the look. If your boots are a more crazy print, let them be the statement piece of your outfit and stick to a classic, solid dress or skirt and don’t bother with the printed accessory. Tights and over-the-knee socks are always fun to wear under your rain boots with a dress and also add some personality to the look.

Don’t have your Wellies yet? Not to worry, Target has dozens of pairs in every color or print imaginable and for pretty good prices. Just remember these tips and you can wear your Wellies in style, next time it rains or just next time it’s a rain boot day.
