Beyond the ‘Burg: Yale launches pilot program for gender-neutral housing

Yale University is launching a pilot program that would give seniors a co-ed housing option. Members of the Yale Corporation unanimously approved the proposal Friday after reviewing a report regarding the issue from the Yale College Council. Students selecting the option would be provided with a mixed-gender suite. Members of the opposite sex would be prohibited from residing within the same bedroom.

Gender-neutral proposal softened

Attempts by the College of William and Mary Student Assembly to allow gender-neutral housing have been met by resistance from the administration. As a result, the SA is taking smaller steps such as streamlining the application process for students with special needs. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to make the College a more inclusive place, laying the groundwork for campus wide acceptance of multiple genders.

A necessity for neutrality

Few policy changes at the College of William and Mary have been met with such tentativeness on the part of the administration as the proposed creation of gender-neutral housing. First advocated by the Student Assembly last fall, the four-step proposal has received both positive feedback and criticism from College administrators over the past few semesters.
