Friday, Oct. 23, a back porch collapsed at an off-campus house on the 200 block of Matoaka Court rented by students from the College of William and Mary. Emergency medical services transported 13 people to the hospital, while 15 traveled there themselves, according to the Williamsburg Police Department.
None of the injuries were life-threatening.
Members of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority gathered at the house that night to celebrate Homecoming weekend.
The Williamsburg Fire Department, James City County Fire Department and WPD responded to the scene after officers received a call at approximately 10:07 p.m.
Williamsburg police say they are still working to confirm the exact number of self-transports to the hospital. WPD also said the City of Williamsburg’s Codes Compliance Division has been notified about the incident and is inspecting the house.
Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Public Safety Ginger Ambler ’88 Ph.D. ’06 sent an email the next morning to community members about the porch collapse.
“We are grateful that none of the injuries were life-threatening,” she wrote.
Ambler followed up by saying the College is working to support students impacted by the incident.
“Colleagues in health & wellness, academic wellbeing, public safety, care support, student leadership development, residence life, and more are working to assist our students,” she wrote.
