Faculty gets gender policy clarification

New anti-discrimination language is being added to the College of William and Mary’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities to include a more comprehensive definition of gender identity and expression. Meanwhile, state officials have rolled back policies banning discrimination based of sexual orientation. Physics professor and Faculty Assembly President Eugene Tracy, along with history professor Leisa Meyer, initiated the change last spring. The policy already prohibited discrimination based on gender, sex and sexual orientation.

Time to go gender-blind

Once an all-male, all-white school and now a place that welcomes all comers, the College of William and Mary has done much in the effort for openness and diversity. Now, by forcing the Student Assembly to water down its gender-blind housing bill, the administration has shirked its responsibility to this legacy. We implore it to reconsider its stance. For better or for worse, our dorms are designed to protect our students from their own libidos.

Transgender homecoming queen a first for College

Jessee Vasold ’11 made history at the College of William and Mary Wednesday when ze was announced as the school's first transgender homecoming queen, representing the Class of 2011. Vasold identifies as gender-queer and prefers to be referred to with gender neutral pronouns: "ze" in place of he or she and "zir" rather than him or her. Vasold has also created a Facebook account for a female identity, Kathy Middlesex. Friends suggested that Vasold run for homecoming queen.

Encyclopedia TWAMPtannica: now with more ineptitude!

Your Student Assembly unanimously passed the Welcoming Incoming Freshmen Act and the Gender Neutral Housing Option Support Act during last night's meeting. The Welcoming Incoming Freshmen Act allocates up to $900 from the consolidated reserve to create an electronic copy of the TWAMPtannica Encyclopedia to be posted on the William and Mary website and disseminated to incoming students. The SA spent $2,500 to print these encyclopedias over the summer, and to spend any more money on them is frankly embarrassing.
