Tuesday, Sept. 8, Student Assembly senators debated the Subsidize Plan B Bill II, which would maintain subsidization of Plan B for students. Students currently must pay $5 for Plan B contraception through the Student Health Center due to a subsidy that has been in place for several years. The Subsidize Plan B Bill II proposes renewing SA funding to continue the current cost of the pill for students.
Sen. Nathan Yang ’28 expressed support for expanding the subsidy to cover the full cost of Plan B.
“It’s not like people are going to abuse Plan B,” Yang said. “It’s something that, if you need it, you really need it.”
Director of Student Leadership Development Anne Arseneau ’89 M.A.Ed ’92 suggested senators table the issue for the Tuesday, Sept. 16 meeting to allow for conversations with members of the Student Health Center about fully subsidizing Plan B down to $0. This decision passed by unanimous consent.
The senate also discussed the First Amendment Series Bill, introduced by Finance Committee Chair Sen. Neha Baskar ’29. The bill would allocate funding for events put on by the SA Department of University Policy & Student Rights for the College’s Year of Civic Leadership.
Baskar said some of the proposed events include a protest roundtable, media literacy workshop and a faculty panel and a banned book raffle centered on free speech.
