Thursday, Oct. 15, students at the College of William and Mary gathered behind the Wren Building for a demonstration in support of two dining service workers who were released from their positions after serving undercooked chicken. UNITE HERE, the union representing dining service workers at the College, organized the gathering.
The group previously held a demonstration in support of the dining service workers Friday, Oct. 2. Following that gathering, a petition calling on the College to reinstate the two dining service workers circulated. Jack Guilfoyle ’29, co-president of College Socialists and a student organizer for UNITE HERE, said the petition reached 259 signatures.
The demonstrators walked to the Office of the Provost in Blow Memorial Hall and presented the petition to Administrative Operations and Project Manager Scot Procanin.
“Removing workers does not address underlying issues in campus dining operations,” Guilfoyle said. “We believe the College and its dining services provider should pursue a fair, transparent and constructive process that prioritizes food safety, accountability and appropriate corrective action.”
Procanin thanked Guilfoyle and the other students for their message and said he would share it with the Office of the Provost. The demonstrators then exited Blow Memorial Hall and dispersed without incident.
