Monday, Nov. 2, Jason Hill, the owner of the local signage company Fine Signs & Graphics, responded to The Flat Hat’s reporting about his company’s donation to Carolyn Murphy’s campaign for Williamsburg City Council.
According to public records, Fine Signs & Graphics donated $3,372 in-kind for sign printing and supplies for Murphy’s campaign.
Hill said he had worked with Murphy while she was the City’s planning and codes compliance director.
“She was a hundred times better than anyone who’s in there now,” Hill said. “She’d talk to you, work with you [and] be accommodating. People now are incompetent [and] don’t do their jobs.”
Hill said he felt the current city council’s priorities are misaligned with residents’ needs.
“Why is Midtown Row painted yellow?” he said. “Why do we have so many run-down houses?”
Hill also criticized The Flat Hat’s attention to his campaign donations.
“Instead of focusing on donations to Carolyn Murphy, focus on how you can improve Williamsburg as a whole,” he said. “Focus on why people fell off a deck. I don’t think Carolyn Murphy should be the main problem of what you guys should worry about.”

Hill said he feels Murphy has been an effective public servant.
“I think Carolyn Murphy was great when she worked for the City,” he said. “She was fair. The people now, you can’t get calls back, you can’t get meetings.”
